Marilyn Ness On The Styling Needed To Turn The Camera on herself
Styled for the multi-year production of the film postmortem
Over three years, I worked closely with Marilyn during the production of her latest feature documentary, POSTMORTEM, as she moved from behind the scenes into the frame as both director and subject.
A play about one woman’s reckoning with her past, and a documentary about its staging, POSTMORTEM explores the healing power of the creative process. The wardrobe was shaped to stay out of the way - easing decisions and creating a sense of steadiness as the work unfolded.
Our collaboration was built in person and carried forward through constant exchange, allowing the wardrobe to evolve alongside the production and remain a source of quiet support throughout.
So the camera could hold her, on her own terms.
“Having spent most of my career behind the camera, stepping into a role in front of it felt daunting - but Rachel’s styling made me feel comfortable in my body (finally), confident, and truly like myself. Knowing I was in her care allowed me to let go and be my authentic self on camera.”
